One would think that after three decades in show business, Gary Valenciano will just take things easy and let the next generation take over. If his “Arise Gary V 3.0” concert, held last April 11 and 12, is any indication, the supporters of “Mr. Pure Energy” need not retire as their idol clearly still has a lot to offer the public as a performer and an admirable human being.

Concert Round Up: Mayday Parade live in Manila 2014

Words by Manila Concert Scene

There was a time back in the early 2000s when every hormonal kid in high school wanted to be in a band. The measure of cool was defined by the number of gigs you played in high school fairs and how many worn out chucks and vans slip ons you had. It was the golden days of ‘emo’ as they call it. It was a genre that was noisy as punk but less fuck you and more ‘please love me or I will bleed to death.’ It was a time when hipster was not exactly something you wanted to be and the closest to the Alesso and Axwell EDM you have now was Ben Gibbard and this dude who sent him beats via postal service to lay poetic narratives of love lost and missed connections.

There’s a lot of sub genres in the emo world. There’s the heavier and really dark emo bands and then there was the light and cutesy coming of age (also known as the ‘at the cusp of puberty’) emo genre sub group. Mayday Parade seems to fall right in between the two extremities which made them very popular to everyone back then and until now have still garnered a pretty good following all over the world.

When In Manila: Flashback Friday with the members of When In Rome

Last April 4, 2013, an intense Flashback Friday Party happened at the Solaire Resort and Casino’s Grand Ballroom. Together with DMC Philippines, Solaire threw an all out 80’s party featuring main act When In Rome. Neon leotards, mullets and fros, shoulder pads and spraynet were definitely back in style. British legendary new wave band behind the hit song: "The Promise", returned to Manila for an 80s throwback dance party.

It was a dance party democracy if we could say so, and it was the first time it’s been done. Close Up Forever Summer gave social media the power to vote on several elements involving the event, and the results were astounding.

With every question supported by massive tweets plus every request pushed online – it was no surprise the event was on trending status for several days leading to D-day.

As Close Up brand manager GemLaforteza shares “We decided with our followers. We gave people a choice between an Indie concert or an EDM party and the crowd decided they want to dance.”
And dance they did. Thousands of them. Thousands of them seen in their tents made by Globe, Greenwich andHavaianas. Thousands of them in their florals and their Go-Pros.
