Jay Sean!

Will British R and B soul singer Jay Sean live up to his “If I Aint Got You” song lyrics and stay in “a villa in Manila” during his Philippine visit this September? It’s all up in the air. One thing’s for sure, Jay Sean fans are in for a fantastic booty shakin’ time as the massive voice behind the hits “Down” and “Do You Remember” graces Manila shores for a one night only concert at the Araneta Coliseum on September 3, 2010 entitled “Jay Sean: All Or Nothing”. The show, produced by BlueDream Entertainment with Senior Vice President and Managing Director Christian Andoy at the helm, will feature the singer’s trademark enticingly smooth r and b stylings and jaw-dropping beat boxing, skills all of which merited him the title of “one man boyband”.
Born in India and raised in the UK, Jay Sean’s success hits two birds with one stone, giving pride to both countries as being the first solo act of South Asian origin to top the Billboard Hot 100 with the American debut single “Down”. The said feat also earned Jay Sean the distinction of being the first British artist to conquer the Billboard Hot 100 in over a decade with the same song, (the last Brit being Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury in 1980). After the breakthrough success of “Down” came Jay Sean’s second hit the unforgettable “Do You Remember” which sold a million digital copies in the United States alone. Both hit songs can be found in Jay Sean’s third album “All Or Nothing” released last November 2009. Jay Sean describes “All Or Nothing” as “diverse” “drawing heavily from ‘90s hip hop influences” and “composed of songs that resonate through the years”. And as early as now a 4th album is slated for release in November 2010 with names like Mary J BLige and Pitbull already lined up to make guest appearances in Jay Sean’s 4th offing.

You could very well say Jay Sean’s success was written in the stars, christened as Kamaljiit Singh Jhoti, the suave singer changed his stage name to Jay Sean; J coming from what his friends back in India called him and Sean being a newer version of “Shaan” which was a childhood pet name among Jay Sean’s family members. (Turns out Shaan translated into English literally means “shining star”!) An even bigger surprise? The handsome singer almost skipped the music scene completely! Jay Sean was two years into medical school when he was offered a record deal. Very close to his family (Jay Sean even had his mom, dad, granddad and uncle appear in his “Eyes On You” video!) they gave their full support and the rest, as they say, is chart-topping history.

The British-Asian crossover artist deftly mixes rapping and singing in all his albums, rapping which reminds him of his back in the day roots as part of the London-based hiphop duo “Compulsive Disorder” and singing which Jay Sean shares brings out his more emotional side. Catch this sexy singer’s heart thumping, hip grinding music in the flesh as he brings Araneta Coliseum “Down” on September 3 2010 at 8pm! Truly, Blue Dream Entertainment couldn’t have picked a more thrilling act for their first foray into bringing foreign artists to the Philippines, and this is just the start of many more exciting concerts to come. Grab your “Jay Sean: All Or Nothing” tickets at all Ticketnet outlets or visit www.ticketnet.ph for more details. Ticket prices are at 6102 for VIP (Reserved seating), 5300 for Patron (Reserved seating), 4122 for Lower Box (Reserved seating), 3024 for Upper Box A (Reserved seating), 1593 for Upper Box B, and 530 for General Admission.

One Way Press Conference

One! This is how we rock, Way! This is how we roll! One! Trust me now, you’ll
be screaming for encore!” With a song like that how can you not scream for K-Pop /hiphop group “One Way”?

This brand new group brings a fresh, funky dimension to the saccharine-dominated world of K-pop, catching the attention of not only K-pop fans but R and B aficionados as well, simultaneously opening the usually narrow road of Asian artists seeking to break into the global R and B scene.

The three member group with menthol smooth voices and suave moves is composed of Peter, Chance, and Young Sky. The band started when Peter and Young Sky first met in middle school in Sydney Australia. Chance, who was the lead singer of an American band “Xtacy Xport,” came into the picture when Young Sky migrated to California for highschool. All the boys are no strangers to the ins and outs of the music scene, with Peter having prior experience in the Korean music landscape having debuted
in 2008 as a solo artist under a different label. (“Showman” was the title of Peter’s song and self-titled album released back in 2008).Having prior experience with two different musical backgrounds became an interesting aspect to the artistic sensibilities of One Way, providing them a deeper and wider audience breadth, which also resonated with the groups ultra- slick, groovy tunes.

Last July 28, 2010 One Way threw a presscon at Anabel’s restaurant in Tomas Morato and Manila Concert Scene was right in the midst of all the excitement. The presscon was part of One Way’s Philippine visit to promote their self-titled debut album. The tour was made possible with the generous help of their music label, Universal Records and the three boys were equally excited to visit the country and meet their multitudes of fans. (Droves were even camped out at the presscon site!)Peter, who could easily become an honorary Pinoy exclaimed, “The Philippines is a country that welcomes warmth into their arms, it’s just been amazing in all aspects, people with their hospitality and the vibe in their shows, and of course our One Loves (a term of endearment he uses to call their fans).” The jovial singer was even downloading Tagaolog applications in his mobile phone, amusing the audience with Filipino expressions like, “Ikinalulugod kitang makilala” and “pwede ba kitang yakapin” (an obvious fan favorite). When asked about their musical influences Chance shared that they love classic jazz, r and b and rap.

Young Sky added that some dream collaborations would be with Timabaland Pharell and Kanye West. The group is also set to collaborate locally with none other than Asian’s romantic balladeer Christian Bautista. Ballad meets hiphop meets K-pop? A very interesting musical combination, indeed!!

Catch this ground breaking group live at SM Supermalls on July 30 in SM North Edsa Sky Dome, July 31 in SM Megamall and August 1 in SM Mall of Asia.

Jason Derulo Live In Manila: Glorietta

Written by: Jamie Ortega

You don’t say his name you sing it!! “Jason Deruloooooooo,” the Hit Man Of Music wowed the crowd on July 23, 2010 at the Glorietta Activity Center. The R and B breakthrough artist of 2009 set Ayala shoppers on fire with his awesome break dancing moves, bewildering somersaults and epic vocals. Jason sang songs from his self-titled debut album amidst a smoke-infused stage and four back-up dancers, starting with the uppity ditty “Sky’s The Limit”. Jason then launched into his third single “Riding Solo” as the audience sang along to the catchy lyrics. The R and B sensation shared that he wrote “Riding Solo” because he wanted to express how great it was to be single, being a contrast to the other songs playing on the radio about falling in love.

A surprise number was Jason’s equally riveting rendition of Justin Timberlake “Sexyback” proving the R and B singer’s versatility in doing covers as well as original songs. Another highlight of the concert was when Jason asked a girl from the audience up on stage and serenaded the emotional ditty “What If” to her. “Mahal kita” and “Salamat po,” he enthused to a very appreciative audience after his performance. From a somber ambiance the crowd went wild when Jason brazenly ripped off his black sando top off at the end of his hit single “Watcha Say” and subsequently threw it to the audience with anxious females fighting over for a piece. Just before his finale song Jason thanked all his fans and supporters for making 2009 a great year for him and how they helped make his dreams come true. As expected the last song was Jason’s infectious hit, “In My Head” prompting the audience who were already at the front of the stage and dancing wildly about, to ask for more.

After the last song lucky Ayala shoppers had a once in a lifetime chance to meet their idol and have a picture taken or a CD signed with him. In between sessions the friendly R and B sensation waved to his fans that were cheering and shouting his name. Haven’t caught the Derulo fever yet? Experience him on July 24 at Alabang Center and July 25 at Trinoma brought to you by Ayala Malls. Keep on visiting Manila Concert Scene for more updates on Manila’s hottest music events.
