Dangal ng OPM Awardees Bared - OPM Fair 2011 this Tuesday
Freddie Aguilar, APO Hiking Society, ASIN, Nora Aunor, Jose Mari Chan, Pilita Corrales, Juan Dela Cruz Band, and Hotdog – all trailblazers of Original Pinoy Music – have just been proclaimed recipient-honorees of the first-ever Dangal ng OPM Awards, the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) announced recently.
The award is conferred upon living OPM artists who are deemed icons of the Philippine Music Industry and have lent prestige, helped popularize and consistently given significant contributions to the growth of Original Pinoy Music for at least 25 years. The awardees will be honored during the formal opening rites of the OPM Fair 2011 at 8:00 a.m. on October 11 at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.
"From over a hundred nominees all deserving of the award, we have trimmed down the list to honor those who have consistently promoted OPM for at least 25 years. This number is significant because this year marks our organization's silver anniversary," declares OPM President Ogie Alcasid.
OPM Secretary Dingdong Avanzado, who heads the OPM Fair 2011 Organizing Committee, is excited about the awards. "It's our first time to honor pioneering OPM artists who have trailblazed OPM traditions. We're honoring not only solo singers but also bands performing various music genres who have popularized OPM from the late 1960s to present."
Themed Ang Himig Natin Noon at Ngayon, OPM Fair 2011 is a day-long event free and open to the general public. It features a music trade fair with CD launches and sale, videoke competition and duets with popular OPM stars, OPM-themed performances by choirs, marching and rock bands and rondallas, government agency booths offering public services, and an evening gala concert with top OPM singing stars.
With the assistance of Senator Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan and Mayor Herbert Bautista, the project aims to drum up media and public support for the popularization, dissemination, and continuing patronage of Original Pinoy Music. It is also supported by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, PAGCOR, Puregold, Tanduay, Dr. Vicky Belo, Intel Philippines, and WAVE Sound and Music Company.
OPM was established in 1986 and is now on its 25th year of promoting the welfare and patronage of local singers and advocating policies for the growth of the music industry. It was conferred the 2007 Dangal ng Haraya Award for Promotion of Philippine Culture by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and is the only artists' organization in Asia and the Pacific recognized by the New York-based United Nations Department of Public Information as an NGO-accredited organization.
OPM's current Board of Directors includes Ogie Alcasid, president; Noel Cabangon, vice president for external affairs; Gary Valenciano, vice president for internal affairs; Christian Bautista, vice president for special projects; Dingdong Avanzado, secretary; and Jose Mari Chan, treasurer; and Mitch Valdes, chairman. Former presidents Celeste Legaspi and Jim Paredes and executive director Elmar Beltran Ingles also serve as ex officio board members.
