MCS Concert Review: KoЯn rocks the Big Dome for the first time

Title: KoЯn rocks the Big Dome for the first time
Written by Kevin Pableo
Edited by Jamie Ortega
Ovation Productions has proven, once again, that when it comes to nu metal, they’re the one to beat. Korn, who is the very first nu metal band to perform in the Big Dome, turned the SMART Araneta Coliseum into one rocking rolling and headbanging mass on August 10, 2011.
Slapshock, the concert’s opening act, set the tone for the entire evening with their first tune, “Wake Up”. Often compared to bands like Limp Bizkit, the rock group fronted by Jamir Garcia, showcased their trademark hiphop and heavy metal fusion as they performed 5 of their hits including Agent Orange”, “Adios” and “Carino Brutal.” Before leaving the stage Garcia announced that they will be releasing a new album “Kinse Kalibre” this August, a bit of news which was greeted with whoops and yelps from the audience.
Before the main act hit the stage Kid Knuckles warmed up the crowd with a set that featured classic rock hits like Rammstein’s Feuer Frei and System of Down’s Chop Suey, etc. A sign which made the audience go wild was when the stage crew unwrapped Jonathan Davis’ microphone.
Korn peppered the Big Dome with their mesmerizing, guttural and eerily melodic tunes like “Blind” which was the band’s very first single from their self-titled album. Other grim, angst-laden and foreboding-sounding tunes were “Here To Stay””Pop A Pill and “Freak On A Leash” which was followed by a snippet from Pink Floyd’s “Breathe”.
Jonathan displayed rare versatility by using his bagpipes at the intro of the medley: “Shoots and Ladder” and “One”. You know you’ve got a great rock concert when a crazed mosh pit appears and at the start of the song “Got The Life” ardent fans created a giant circle pit near the patron section of the Big Dome ”.
For the encore the band performed “Falling Away From Me” followed by a rousing medley of “Coming Undone”, “We Will Rock You”(Queen cover), “Twisted Transistor”, “Make Me Bad” Thoughtless”, “Did My Time” and “Clown”. The very last song which punctuated a night of head banging craziness was “Y’all Want A Single.” After taking their bows Jonathan Davis, “Munky” James Shuffer, “Fieldy” Reginald Arvizu and Ray Luzier threw some guitar picks and drum sticks to the crowd. Jonathan thanked the fans and promised to return to Manila in the future. It’s a promise the zealous Pinoy Korn fans hope their idols will keep.
An estimated 3,000 to 6,000 rockers packed the arena for KoЯn’s 1st major concert in Manila. Thanks to Ovation Productions for bringing KoЯn LIVE here in Manila.

MCS Concert Review: Timeless Concert with Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Tremeloes’ Chip Hawkes in Manila

Timeless Concert with Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Tremeloes’ Chip Hawkes in Manila
Written by Kevin Pableo
Edited by Jamie Ortega
DMC Philippines and Clear Channels Events brought to Manila the one of the biggest rock and roll band of the 60s, Gerry and The Pacemakers. The British beat group performed at two local venues, the Waterfront Hotel Cebu – Lahug on August 5, 2011 and the PICC Plenary Hall on August 6, 2011.
The Bloomfields, a band known for covering popular hits from the 60’s and 70’s kicked off a night filled with lively nostalgia. The band performed Beatles hits like “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, and “I Saw Her Standing There”. A notable moment was when Rocky Callado, the drummer of the band, performed a drum solo. Before their last song, “Hey Jude,” the band requested everyone present to sing the last part of the song, setting the mood for the night ahead.
What would a classic concert be without the legendary Ramon “RJ” Jacinto? Dullsville, for sure. After the Bloomfields the legendary rock singer grabbed the mike, rocking classic 60’s hits like “Surfin In The USA” a performance which roused the audience from their seats.
Then it was time for Gerry And The Pacemakers. The band revealed how excited they were, because it was their first time to perform in Manila. Chip Hawkes, the former bassist/vocalist of the band The Tremeloes also made a special appearance, entertaining the audience with his rendition of The Beatles’ classic hit “Twist and Shout”, “There Comes My Baby”, “Do You Love Me” , etc. Oldies but goodies indeed!
A highlight of the show was when Gerry Marsden talked about his love story which he used as inspiration to write their hit single “Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying.” The band, who possesses the distinction of being the first act to reach number one in the UK singles chart with their first three singles, did not disappointment as they regaled the audience with tunes like It’s Gonna Be Alright” “How Do You Do It”, “I Like It”, “Ferry Cross The Mersey”, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
Gerry acknowledged the presence of the former first lady, Ms. Imelda Marcos, who sat at the front row of the Plenary Hall. Amongst a sea of songs it was one tune that stood out and that was what the band used for their encore. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” reverberated through the walls of the PICC Plenary Hall, musical proof that songs, no matter how many days, years or centuries pass, will always have the power to evoke memories we will keep for the rest of our lives.
The show ended at 11:30pm.Aside from the former First Lady Puerto Princesa city mayor Edward Hagedorn, TV/radio hosts Ms Cory Quirino and former first lady Ms. Imelda Marcos were other notable personalities present at the said concert.
Special thanks to DMC Philippines and Clear Channels for allowing us to cover the event and to Gerry And The Pacemakers and Chip Hawkes of The Tremeloes here in the Philippines for making us wistfully smile the whole night!
Trivia:
Did you know that Gerry and The Pacemakers and the Beatles share the same manager? We’re talking about the legendary Brian Epstein.
