Relive Evanescence

Title: Relive Evanescence
Written by Jamie Ortega

Talk about kicking off the New Year with a bang! Ovation Productions ushers in 2012 with performances from two premium rock bands, Evanescence and Bush.

It’s a formula that’s been crafted to perfection- soaring, heart-wrenching choruses blending into hauntingly effective arrangements- that’s made Evanescence a household name. Founded in Little Rock Arkansas by singer and guitarist Amy Lee along with guitarist Ben Moody, the band experienced their first taste of fame with their first full-length album Fallen released in 2003. The compilation sold more than 17 million copies worldwide and helped the band win two Grammy Awards.

Their first live album, Anywhere But Home, was equally successful, selling one million copies worldwide. Evanescence’s second studio effort The Open Door sold an impressive six million copies, cementing band's place in the rock hemisphere.  However, just like any other group Evanescence has gone through several changes. David Hodges, co-founder Moody, bassist Will Boyd, guitarist John Le Compt and drummer Rocky Gray all left the band.

Be that as it may, the band did not allow this change to set them back. They continued to churn out their unique brand of music with their hard work undoubtedly paying off. Evanescence released their self-titled third studio album Evanescence on October 11, 2011 which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 127, 000 copies in sales.

They may be labeled as a rock band; however, by debuting at number 1 on four different billboard charts: the Rock Albums, the Alternative Albums, Hard Rock Albums the band has successfully crossed multiple genres. Evanescence’s lead vocalist Amy Lee set their band apart from other musical groups pervading the scene with this statement in a previous interview, “We’re definitely a rock band, but the twist is that the band's music is epic, dramatic, dark rock.”

The band is more popularly defined by their hits “Bring Me To Life” and “My Immortal”. “Bring Me To Life” propelled Evanescence to where they are today. It was the band’s first major label debut single, their first UK number one single, and it also climbed to the 5th spot on the American Billboard Hot 100. On the other hand “My Immortal” peaked at number 7 on both the US and UK charts. Bring Me To Life was also recognized at the 2004 Grammy Awards where the band bagged Best Hard Rock Performance and Best New Artist Awards. Any superhero fans out there? The two movies were featured in the soundtrack of the action movie Daredevil.

Touring is what this band loves to do and that’s what they’ve recently been busy with. On November 2011 Evanescence played at sold-out venues in UK, Germany, and France. Last month they performed at the Noble Peace Prize Concert, performing Bring Me To Life.

They will be making their way to Manila with special guest: BUSH on February 19, 2012 for a concert at Smart Araneta Coliseum. Grab your tickets at all Ticketnet outlets.

Press Release: SMASH PROJECT 2012 Feat. The Used, The Cab, Cobra Starship and Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba LIVE IN MANILA

Let the summer mayhem begin as DAYLY Entertainment proudly brings: SMASH PROJECT 2012 feat. The Used, The Cab, Cobra Starship and Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba. Four foreign bands on ONE stage for a night of rock induced energy, amplified further by local rock bands: Chicosci, Urbandub and Typecast.

Expect American rock band The Used to rock the Dome in this year’s first mini music festival. Formed in 2001, they rose to fame in 2002 after releasing their self-titled album. The band has sold 3 million records worldwide.  The title of their second studio album, “In Love and Death” was in reference to frontman Bert McCracken’s personal tragedy during the recording of the album. “In Love and Death” received favorable reviews with three singles “Take It Away”, “All That I’ve Got” and “I Caught Fire”, gaining commercial recognition.

The Used’s rock music can be further described as Gross Pop - which was how Bert McCracken put it, saying,“In the past, we've always kind of brought pop sensibility into heavy rock, but this is going to be all that much more tantalizing and brutal. Our songs are 10 times messier and noisier than they've ever been.  Quinn Allman said Gross Pop "[It's] gonna be pretty raw. I think a lot of the stuff is very much more poetic and lyrical, and the sound is more retro and raw with less production.”  Members:  Bert McCracken (vocals, piano, keyboards), Jeph Howard (bass), Quinn Allman (guitar), Dan Whitesides (drums)
The Used will be joined by Cobra Starship, an American synthpop band created by lead vocalist Gabe Saporta in 2003. Cobra Starship is known for their songs “Good Girls Go Bad” feat. Gossip Girl Leighton Meester and "You Make Me Feel…” from their “Night Shades” album.
Members:  Gabe Saporta (vocals), Ryland Backington (guitars), Alex Suarez (bass), Nate Navarro (drums), Victoria Asher (keytarist).

Also joining the melee is American rock band The Cab. The band was proclaimed by Alternative Press magazine as one of the “100 Bands You Need to Know in 2010”.  Their self-released album Symphony Soldier was hailed by critics as a “masterpiece” while its single entitled “Bad” received positive reviews from critics and listeners as well. The band, though relatively new, already has a solid base and is continuously gaining worldwide recognition with their fresh approach to rock music.
Band Members: Alexander De Leon (vocals), Alex Marshall (piano, guitar, backing vocals), Joey Thunder (bass)

Dashboard Confessional is also an American rock band who will be joining this summer’s rockfest on an acoustic set up. Led by singer-songwriter Chris Carraba, the band is known for their hit songs “Vindicated” (featured in the Spiderman 2 soundtrack),  “Stolen” and “Belle of the Boulevard”. Their last album, “Alter the Ending”, showed maturity in terms of musicality and content.  Fans of the band since 2000 has been following the music that Chris Carraba has exquisitely given life. Known for his unplugged performance, frontman Chris will be gracing the stage this March to end this rocking lineup.

End the first quarter of 2012 with a bang, and witness a rock fusion like never before. SMASH Project 2012 live in Manila on March 8, 2012 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum. Tickets  available on sale on the 24th of December, 2011. Ticket prices:  Patron Standing: Php 4,500, Lower Box: Php 3,500, Upper A: Php 2,500, Upper B: Php 1,000 and Gen Ad: Php 500. MCS Article: Get Avril's style!

Title: Get Avril's Style
Written by Jamie Ortega

Excited to see Avril Lavigne on February 16 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum?
Why dont you come to the concert dressed like the punk princess? Follow these stylish but simple steps to imbibe her unique and spunky look! Dont forget to inject a little bit of yourself to your ensemble as well for some personal flavor. Enjoy!

Punk look:

a) Wear your hair down with  long sidebangs. Get subtle  layers at the bottom of your hair. If you can dye your hair blond, do it! Make sure one strand is colored pink.
b) Buy clothes made out of denim and wear loads of black, white, and pink colored outfits. Avril is  also fond of  skulls, you can stitch the design onto your clothes if you cant find a ton of skull-ish outfits at the mall
c) What would an Avril outfit be like without a dark tie? Pair them with t-shirts and mini-skirts.
d) For footwear Converse shoes or high tops are the way to go. They arent hard to find and you can pair with them with other outfits. Talk about value for your money!
e) Shine with silver. Accesorize your outfits with chunky silver, pink, or black bracelets to get that Avril pizazz.

Skater look:

1) Buy two tank tops and wear them on top of the other. You can also place pins with funky designs on your shirt and pants. Make sure you are wearing boy shirts, cargo pants, baggy jeans and shirts with hoodies. Before leaving the house put that hoodie up!
2) Sock it to them! Put on striped socks that reach the mid-length of your calves
3) Fasten studded belts with huge buckles on your waist
4) Wear red and black bracelets, sweatbands and spike bracelets will also do. Avril puts on a lot of accessories so dont be afraid to go overboards! String chains and wear rings on your thumb.
Make-up for both styles:
a) Apply foundation
b) Wear extremely light blush and nude lipstick
c) Go crazy on the eyes! Create a smokey eye. Draw a thick line along your upper and lower lashes with black eyeliner. Finish if off with a little wing or cat tail at the edges of your eye
d) Apply grey on your eyelids, top if off with black eyeshadow along your outer eyelid
e) Pile on the mascara! Use volumizing mascara for a more striking finish. Apply to both upper and lower lashes

Now that you look like Avril grab your tickets for the most punk-ified concert of the year!

Simple Joys for Simple Boys

Title: Simple Joys for Simple Boys
Written by Jamie Ortega

Some people think that world-famous musicians arent real people, with real  simple joys and fans. Even if theyre an insanely famous pop-punk band the boys of Simple Plan savor the simple treasures of life, like ice cream and cartoons.  Be sure to catch them live in Manila on January 12 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum! Get your tickets now! The show is produced by DAYLY ENTERTAINMENT.

Fun facts:
Pierre Bouvier is definitely a one big kid at heart. He is a fan of the animated dog, Scooby Doo and he says that he still watches the cartoon on television.
Bromance? Jeff Stinco, Chuck Comeau, Pierre Bouvier and Sebastian Lefebvre all attended the same high school.
Pierre Bouvier loves Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream ( we wonder if we should feed him some Pinoy ice cream flavors like ube or macapuno)
Seb Lefebvre prefers boxers over briefs! (Girls you know what to give him for Christmas)
Jeff Stinco's fave superhero is Wolverine.

MCS Exclusive: Simple Plan's Journey to the Top

Title: Simple Plan's Journey to the Top
Written by Jho Mariano
Edited by Jamie Ortega

Before you rock out to Simple Plan on January 12 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum feast your eyes on some fun facts about their members. Be sure to catch them live in Manila! Get your tickets now! The show is produced by DAYLY ENTERTAINMENT.

1. Remember their roots: Simple Plan is a Canadian punk-pop band consisting of former high school friends Pierre Bouvier (vocals), Jeff Stinco (guitar), David Desrosiers (bass), Seb Lefebvre (guitar), and Chuck Comeau (drums). At age 13, Pierre and Chuck formed a band in Montreal, Canada named Reset. In the long run, Chuck left the band and started a new band with some friends and Pierre soon joined, after that Simple Plan was formed.

2. The band has released four studio albums: No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls (2002), Still Not Getting Any...(2004), Simple Plan (2008) and Get Your Heart On! (2011); as well as two extensively promoted live albums: Live in Japan 2002 (2003) and MTV Hard Rock Live (2005). Simple Plan fans which ones were your fave and why? Tell us below!

3. After recording several demos, Simple Plan finally scored a record deal with Lava Records, a division of Warner Brothers Records.  They collaborated with Good Charlotte's Joel Madden and Mark Hoppus of Blink 182, the end result  being the fiery and fun No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls, released in early 2003 by Lava Records. It sold over four million copies worldwide and went double-platinum in Canada and America.

4. The Bob Rock-produced second album, Still Not Getting Any was produced the next year. It did quite well, scoring hits like Crazy and Welcome to My Life. In 2005, they released a live concert album entitled, what else,  Live from the Hard Rock.

5. Simple Plan has been nominated for different awards from various distinguished and respectable organizations. They were nominated for a Juno award, Kerrang! award, MTV Asia award, MTV Video Music award, MuchMusic Video award, NRJ Music award, Teen Choice Award- just to name a few.

6. Like what many people say, being nominated is an honor in itselt, although nothing spells success like an award.  The group has taken home several awards like the 2002 CASBY award, 2006 Juno Fan Choice Award, 6 MuchMusic Video awards, 2006 artiste s'étantillustré le plus hors Québec, and 2005 Teen Choice Award, and a lot more.

7. Some of their annual gigs Rock out on stage! The band performs at the annual Vans Warped Tour and other gigs around the globe.

8. The band returned  after a three year hiatus, with another album, Get Your Heart On!, which featured cameos from Rivers Cuomo, Natasha Bedingfield, and All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth. MacKenzie Wilson, and  Rovi.

9.
Fan of the Olsen twins? You probably saw Simple Plan in the movie New York Minute starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Simple Plan played the band that Mary-Kate’s character was obsessing with.

10. "I would've gotten away with it if it hadn't been for those meddling kids." Does that line ring a bell? The band’s music was also featured on both Scooby-Doo and the Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed soundtracks.

11. These dudes are definitely rockers with a heart. Simple Plan helps nonprofit and advocacy groups by donating to different organizations such as the MTV Asia Aid benefit, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), RADD (Recording Artists, Actors, and Athletes against Drunk Driving), and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and more. They will be soon forming their own foundation called the Simple Plan Foundation, a foundation that focuses on teen problems ranging from suicide to poverty to drug addiction.
