Nostalgia is a beautiful thing.
And jazz legends, George Benson and Patti Austin seem to have mastered that. By showcasing their rich discography which encompassed decades, the two – together and as individuals – created a romantic evening that celebrated the beauty of the yesteryears. A poignant evening filled with stirring anthems, emotional tributes and breathtaking songs that only the two can truly deliver. And delivered very well at that.
Beyond the heartstrings, it was surprising to see the two deliver their upbeat numbers. With a dash of scat here and a dollop of funk there, George Benson proved that age hasn’t slowed him down – particularly, when he did an outstanding performance of “Give Me The Night”. Meanwhile, Patti strut her stuff in her very sassy classy way. Showing that her livelier numbers can keep up with her more popular ballads.
But still, it was the ballads that met the most applause. “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You”, “The Reason”, “Baby Come To Me” and “In My Life” were some of those that met the strongest reception. Songs such as “If I Believe”, “On Broadway”, “Say You Love Me” and “Breezin’” too were embraced warmly. After all, these songs kept the warmth in a lot of the audience member’s hearts. Indeed, the proving how these two are the masters of evoking nostalgia – how they revive beautiful memories and making us feel home. And loved.
Nostalgia wrapped in the romanticism that only the two can deliver.
In an interview, Patti once commented, “Life is experiential! And from experience you have something to draw upon." And isn’t it wonderful how some of our best experiences in life are coupled by songs from these two?
