WARRIOR FUN

Words by Niche Dumlao

Making Manila the launch pad for the Asian leg of her Warrior Tour, Ke$ha truly made it an opener to remember. The multi-platinum artist gave a show that highlighted her unique pop persona – a kitschy, raunchy, glitter exploding variety – and all the while proving that this girl indeed knows how to throw a party.

“Tonight, I want you to be who you are and not apologize for it”, declares the 26 year old musician. “Tonight it’s all about love, my dear animals”, she adds. And statements like these were peppered throughout her show (could be associated to the fact that the popstar is in fact an ordained minister). Other quotables MinisterKe$ha dropped were her quip on how making out is far better than talking (we agree), and how strip joints are one of the most fun places on Earth. But our favorite, her onstage wish that everyone in the audience get laid after her show. We’re not quite sure if everyone got there though.

SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR SUPER SHOW 5 IN MANILA

Words By Lara Cartujano

There was an ocean of sapphire blue at the Mall of Asia Arena last 24 October 2013 as thousands of fans fervently cheered for Korean boy group Super Junior in its one-night only concert.

As one of the stops for the group’s world tour titled “SUPER JUNIOR WORLD TOUR SUPER SHOW 5 IN MANILA,” the much anticipated concert lasted for more than three hours and saw performances for more than 30 songs.

The concert kicked off with Super Junior’s hit single “Mr. Simple” and was followed by a string of hit singles “Bonamana,” “Super Girl,” “It’s You”, and “Sexy, Free & Single.” All throughout the concert, fans were treated with songs that span a wide range of Super Junior’s discography.  There were the concert favorites such as “Sorry Sorry,” “Sunny”, “Sapphire Blue,” and “Wonder Boy,” while older songs like “Marry U” and “Show Me Your Love” gave off nostalgic vibes.

One of the highlights of the show was when Siwon, Ryeowook, Kangin, and Sungmin cross-dressed to impersonate K-Pop divas Son Dambi, Bada, Gain, and Hyunah, respectively.

Kangin! This was his first time to perform in Manila for Super Show 5.
Nine out of the original thirteen members were present in the concert. Two of the group’s members, Leeteuk and Yesung, are currently serving in the military. Hence when a video of Yesung was shown on the screen singing “Gray Paper,” an emotional atmosphere enveloped the Arena causing some of the fans to cry for missing their idol. On the other hand, two of the original members, Heechul and Kangin, who had just finished their military service, were able to join the tour. This was Kangin’s first time to perform in the Philippines, while this was the first leg of Super Show 5 that Heechul participated in. The group was also joined by Henry and Zhoumi from Super Junior-M, the Chinese sub-group of Super Junior.

#SugarSmashGin

“Hey, now, you're an all star, ___________________. Hey, now, you're a rock star, ___________________. And all that glitters is gold. ___________________.”
“Someday, when my life has passed me by,  ___________________.”
“Tomorrow we can drive around this town  ___________________. The past is gone, but something might be found to take its place. ___________________.”

There are just some songs or decades that are unforgettable. If you know the hits of the 90s, you can fill in the blanks. You were probably singing while reading the lyrics, too.
SugarSmashGin is neither a new food craze nor a new alcoholic cocktail (fortunately); it’s a throwback. Last Monday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, and Gin Blossoms reminded us that music from alternative rock bands endure.

TIESTO, TAKE THREE.

Words by Niche Dumlao

On his third time in Manila, Tiesto began his set with Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful” off “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack. And it seems that was the perfect descriptor of how the night went. From 11pm to the wee hours of the morning, everything were lights and lazers, beer and vodka, young and beautiful.

As master of ceremonies and pumper of energy, Tiesto sure knows how to keep the party going. Well what would you expect, with years in the dance scene, the man is sort of a veteran already. Tijs Michiel Verwest, more popularly known as Tiesto, began his DJ career by playing mostly New Beat and House Music in small clubs in his hometown in Breda,

#3D2 The Repeat Concert

Words by Angela Prats

For those people who missed Martin Nievera’s 3D (Tatlong Dekada) concert last September 13 at the Araneta Coliseum and for those who were there but just couldn’t get enough of him, well it is your lucky day because we had another great opportunity to interview the Concert King himself and he has announced that he will be having a repeat of his concert. This time it’ll definitely be sweeter.

The "Burger King."
It was a lovely afternoon as we arrive at the garden venue for our round table interview with Martin.  As we took our seats he told us, “don’t eat too much ‘coz there will still be burgers”. Little did we know that he himself had grilled very delicious burgers for all the guests to come besides the sumptuous buffet that was already there. This was not going to be any ordinary interview for sure.

As we were reminiscing the past 3D concert with the Concert King himself, I asked him what his favorite moment of the entire night was. And he said, "The Broadway medley for sure. And the standing ovation after that." He continued on saying that he tried so much not to cry in that moment, in front of the audience and that he'll just save his tears for backstage when everybody had gone home. I couldn't agree more when Martin had shared that with us. The whole Araneta was just darn mesmerized by what we all had just experienced.

Martin Nievera Stages A Repeat Of "3D (Tatlong Dekada)" On Nov. 22: #3D2

The Concert King, Martin Nievera proved to one and all that 30 years of musical excellence in an industry that usually thrives on change and superficiality, is a feat that only artists of extraordinary calibre and unbridled passion are able to achieve.  Martin Nievera is, hands down, one such artist.

He is extremely talented and in the 30 years that he has carved his name in the pillars of the local music industry, this gift has never wavered.  He is loved back by his throngs of loyal fans and followers because he, first, showed them an utmost love and devotion to his craft rarely seen in an artist from whatever generation.

At his 30th anniversary billed "3D (Tatlong Dekada)" held last September 13 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, Martin showed his audience why his artistry endures.  The music - well-loved romantic ditties, chart-topping songs - is a given.  So is the Nievera trademark of intelligent, decent and always humorous ways he entertains his audience.  And perhaps the magic that weaves all these together in one neat package is the fact that everyone knows that by just listening to and watching him, they are one with MArtin Nievera, the man and the artist, in this very personal journey.

BEST OF POP ROCK IN BACK 2 BACK 2 BACK
