Concert Roundup: Two Voices, One Night with Meg and Dia

Words by Manila Concert Scene
Fans of The Voice will remember Dia Frampton as the shy, unassuming girl whose voice slowly but surely captivated the US audience through quirky and nuanced covers. Although she came up short of winning the title, Dia didn’t stop pursuing a career in music. Since her stint on the Emmy-winning reality show, Dia has released her first solo album, Red, which made it to number one of the Billboard Top Heatseekers, debuted at number 106 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, and has even gone gold in Thailand.
Dia’s success in Asia led the inspired artist to tour the region alongside her sister, Meg, and her Filipino bandmate/guitarist, Carlo Gimenez. The trio, who have been together for many years pre-Voice as members of the band Meg & Dia, start off their Asian tour in the Philippines, where they were welcomed by adoring fans.
Hard Rock Café in Makati was filled with people anxious to hear Dia sing live. Before the sister act dominated the well-lit stage, up-and-coming artists Jesse and Christian Perkins – or simply, The Perkins Twins – laid out their hearts for the audience to eat up. Judging from the giggles coming from the women in the crowd, it’s safe to say that the twins’ renditions of songs by John Mayer (“Other Side”), Ed Sheeran (“The A-Team”), Maroon 5 (“Love Somebody”), One Direction (“Story of my Life”), and One Republic (“Counting Stars”) resonated well. They even threw in an original song, “Ikaw Na”, into the mix, as a nod to their Pinoy heritage and to tug harder at their listeners’ heartstrings.

After the brothers bowed and smiled their way out of the stage, cheers drowned the venue as Dia, Meg, and Carlo took their places and greeted the audience who were either star-struck or busy taking pictures of their idols. It was surprising to see how Dia – who looked tensed most of the time during her stay on The Voice – felt very much at home in the café. She chatted with her bandmates and fans like all of them have known each other since forever, walking around the perimeter of the stage barefoot.

Meg & Dia’s first song of the night was “Kick the Chair”. Since Kid Cudi was not there to rap, Dia took it upon herself to do the job, which earned her much applause. The duo followed it up with hits from Dia’s album Red, “Walk Away”, “Trapeze”, and “Daniel”, all of which have lyrics that stir emotions through vivid imagery – a testament to Dia’s skills as a writer and the sisters’ love of literature.

Of course, the Meg & Dia concert will not be complete without a performance of songs that catapulted Dia to be a fan favorite on The Voice. Dia showed that her voice has both subtlety and power with Kanye West’s “Heartless” and had the crowd clapping along in R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”. Dia also sang her original song from The Voice, “Inventing Shadows”, with Meg adding to the vocals that made the song more haunting and compelling to the ears.

15 songs, including encore performances of crowd favorites “Monster” and “Broken Ones”, were definitely worth the wait for those who love Meg and Dia. They may be moving on to the next leg of their Asian tour that will take place in Malaysia, but they will be leaving their Filipino fans smiling and hoping to hear fresh, new songs from the insanely talented sisters.
