The National, Youth Lagoon and Buke & Gase in Manila For Febfest 2014

Words by Manila Concert Scene

This coming Thursday, Random Mind Productions is set to hold the second leg of FebFest 2014: Hostess Club Manila at the Metrotent Convention Center in Ortigas. The second leg of the inaugural edition of the FebFest rock festival is slated to feature The National, Buke and Gase, and Youth Lagoon.

Exceeding expectations, last Thursday’s first leg featuring musical greats Warpaint, Mogwai and Eyedress blew the crowd away and Random Mind Productions is set to top that. If you thought last Thursday was great, that was just actually a warm up for this Thursday’s amazing show.
The second leg’s opening group is Brooklyn-based musical duo, Buke and Gase. Band members Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez are noted for their use of handmade instruments such as the "toe-bourine;" the "buke," a six-string former-baritone ukulele; and the "gase," a guitar-bass hybrid.

Dyer and Sanchez had formerly been band mates in the post-punk noise group Hominid. The two started playing together in earnest late 2007, and recorded their first EP "+/-" in 2008. They were signed to Brassland Records after Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National saw them playing a basement venue. In 2009, they were featured on the NPR science program Radiolab and shortly thereafter, recorded their first full-length album "Riposte". In 2012 they released their second EP "Function Falls." Their second full length "General Dome" was released in January 2013.

As part of one of the two main acts playing as well is Youth Lagoon -- The American art project was started in 2010 by musician Trevor Powers. The Boise, Idaho based Powers’ debut album The Year of Hibernation was released on Fat Possum Records on September of the year 2011. The debut album explores themes such as psychological dysphoria and mental distress, and is based around minimalism and hypnotic ambience, which was received with much acclaim. Wondrous Bughouse, Youth Lagoon's second release on the other hand revolves around themes of the metaphysical universe. Powers’ music is a blend of Americana music and Experimental music with atmospheric and electronic elements.
Last but not the least, the American indie rock band from Ohio, The National.  The presently New York based band was formed in the year 99.  Though starting out in the early 90’s as a lo-fi garage band called Nancy (Berringer’s mother’s name), they only were able to release one album called Ruther 3249.  After a series of changes in band name and sound, they finally settled for The National that fateful year of 99.

The band's lyrics, which have been described as "dark, melancholy and difficult to interpret" are written and sung by Matt Berninger. The rest of the band is composed of two pairs of brothers: twins Aaron (guitar and keyboard) and Bryce Dessner (guitar) and Scott (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

To date, the band has recorded six studio albums. The most recent, Trouble Will Find Me, was released in May 2013 and was nominated in the 2014 Grammys for Best Alternative Album.

With that said, don’t miss this Thursday show! It should be a lovely gig so don’t you dare not go!
