One would think that after three decades in show business, Gary Valenciano will just take things easy and let the next generation take over. If his “Arise Gary V 3.0” concert, held last April 11 and 12, is any indication, the supporters of “Mr. Pure Energy” need not retire as their idol clearly still has a lot to offer the public as a performer and an admirable human being.

Gary V.’s career took off in the early 80’s, where his various television appearances earned him a spot in the hearts of the Filipinos who would soon become his avid fans. Throughout his thirty years in the business, Gary, who has earned Awit Awards’ “Best Male Performer” award eleven times, has produced 28 albums brimming with catchy OPM tracks, with most, if not all, achieving multiplatinum status. These, along with his sold-out concerts and TV stints, solidified his place in the Philippine entertainment scene as a music icon.

While “Arise Gary V 3.0” is definitely Gary’s way of saying thank you to all the people who have been behind him in his journey, it’s also a fundraiser for the victims of typhoon Yolanda, Shining Light Foundation, United Nations Children’s Fund, and Operation Blessing Foundation. This is not the only time that Gary V. has given back to the community, for the UNICEF ambassador makes it a point to reach out to the community despite his busy schedule.

Smart Araneta Coliseum was packed with people come concert time. With Gary being a more veteran performer, the assumption would be that his fans are mostly adults, yet he also managed to draw crowds of young people who were up on their feet and screaming during key moments in the show. DJ Papi’s mix was a great warm up for the crowd, who lost it upon seeing Gary’s incredible display of energy, moves, and vocals.

The esteemed performer was joined onstage by fellow ASAP mainstay Iya Villania, former X-Factor mentees AKA Jam, Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo, singer Rico Blanco, and teen sensation Sam Concepcion.

It was refreshing to hear new spins on his hit singles “That’s Why” and “Babalik Ka Rin”, which resonated with the crowd Gary dubbed as “mature”. Nights 1 and 2 of “Arise Gary V 3.0” offered different viewing experiences to the audience through the guest line-up; for instance, while Sarah G. may not be present on Night 2, diva Zsa Zsa Padilla was there to fill the room with sound.

Perhaps the highlights of the concert would be Gary’s numbers with his family – with son Gab and daughter Kiana. Seeing Gary perform with his children is a testament that talent does run in the blood. Gab’s got the stellar dance moves while Kiana has magic in her throat. Son Paolo is not as visible as his siblings, but he is a genius when it comes to running things behind the scenes, being the director of “Arise Gary V 3.0”.

More than a mere musical gathering, “Arise Gary V 3.0” was a re-telling of Gary’s life as a musician, a family man, and a son of God. His steadfast faith shone through most of his music, such as “He’s Enough”, “The Warrior is a Child”, “Sa Yahweh”, and “Shout for Joy”, among others. Having God as the center of his career and life, there is no doubt that Gary V. is here to stay for another 30 years and more.

Congratulations and thank you to Manila Genesis!
