Before music festivals were cool, Pulp Summer Slam has been bringing forth mayhem to Manila. As being the longest running and largest annual metal festival in Southeast Asia, Pulp Summer Slam has been a yearly event that true metal heads surely look forward to. Now on its 14th year, the awesome folks from Pulp brought in seven top international heavy metal bands to come and wreak havoc in Manila for a one day festival, which lasts for 15 hours from the opening of gates at noon to the close of the festival a few hours after midnight.

As it has been a tradition, ground zero for this year’s Slam will be held at the historic Amoranto Stadium in Quezon City, Metro Manila. It’s been that way for more than a decade and a more perfect venue couldn’t be actualized. This year’s festival was pretty killer as Pulp brought in some proper legends in the metal scene. Pulp Summer Slam was co-headlined by two gigantic acts from the United Kingdom: Bullet For My Valentine and Asking Alexandria. Both bands have never performed live in the Philippines and each has millions of fans across the globe.

The audience of Pulp Summer Slam was treated to the murderous musical stylings of thrash metal legends Kreator and new Japanese metal sensation Crossfaith. As if that wasn’t enough, returning for the second time are hardcore favorites Hatebreed and melodic death metal maniacs The Black Dahlia Murder. And for the third time on the back of one of the greatest metal album releases of 2013, "The Dream Calls For Blood", Death Angel will once again flatten the denizens of the Slam with their distinct brand of Bay Area thrash metal.

Of course, the local metal scene was well represented as well. Thanks to Pulp, Summer Slam has become a venue for local metal artists to share their talents for more than 14 years. As support to the heavy international line up, seven local bands played the crowd crazy and carried with them the flag of Philippines' underground music scene. NU Metal band from Cardona Rizal, Galaw Tao, opened the set. It was followed by female-fronted Melodic Death/Thrash Metal band Voice of Tranquility, who returns for the second time in the PULP Summer Slam Stage. Following them is Metalcore band all the way from Davao - David vs. Goliath, after which was followed by Laguna's pride metalcore band Embercore. Opening for the first international act is Metal/Hardcore band from Manila, Sickpig. Taking over the stage towards the end of the festival was Cavite's Metal/Hardcore band Sucketseven and capping of this year's slam is Grindcore Metal band from Quezon City, Tubero.

This year’s Summer Slam was definitely one for the books. After all, it’s hard to go wrong with Fireworks, Booze, Good Music and great company. Best Slam so far most definitely. And if this were not enough, Pulp decided to drop the bomb about Bazooka Rocks’ line up this year. With bands such as Taking Back Sunday, Senses Fail and Saves The Day, you won’t want to miss this.
