Welcome To Manila The 1975!

And this is how it starts.

During their formative teenage years, Matthew Healy, Ross MacDonald, Adam Hann and George Daniel met at Wilmslow High School in Manchester. Brought about by boredom and their love for music they started making their own not really knowing where it was going to go. All they knew was they liked making music and very much liked being in each other’s company.

In an interview with Gigwise, Healy explains "There was this idealistic hippy council worker who started to put on these gigs for kids, to form bands. I remember the guitarist [Adam Hann] came up to me and said he wanted to play one of these shows. We started playing, doing covers of punk songs and pop songs and just started out doing that. Then once we eventually wrote a song, I decided, well, this is a lot better than going to work – or going to school, for that matter. We started from then and we've been making music together since we were about 15 – George was 14, actually, when we started," After Hann invited the members to form a band, they passed their early days covering punk songs in a local club. Healy was originally the drummer, but took over vocals after the previous singer left to start another band. Daniel was recruited as the new drummer to complete the final line-up.

WELCOME BACK HOME, BRUNO MARS

Words by Manila Concert Scene

We cannot stress how impressive Bruno Mars is. We can go on and on about the things that made us go wow. But we’ve decided to list the three that stood out on the Grammy winner’s return to the Philippines. Or should we say, on his return roots.

And we begin with his voice.

Bruno Mars is probably one of the most vocally impressive artists alive! With golden pipes that deliver flawless technique hit after hit after hit. Audience cannot simply get enough of his audible prowess. May it be his pop-driven, “Marry You” or heart-wrenching “When I Was You Man” or even covers of “Ignition” and “Love You Down”, the Grammy winner proves exactly why he is a musical force to be reckoned with.

Over the weekend, the group staged their first 2 shows for their 2014 Philippine Tour. First at the Solaire Grand Ballroom at Solaire Resorts & Casino last March 21 and then at the PICC Plenary Hall on March 22.

Concert Roundup: Washed Out + BATHS in Manila

Words by Kix Suarez
Pictures by Nikko Martinez

As it has always been with love, to find out if it can happen, it takes (first and foremost) guts and some luck. Charm would definitely help you get somewhere but it’s sincerity that keeps it going, keeps love there. A couple of years ago, the idea of bringing independent artists to Manila was straight up impossible. It was as if asking for these artists from production companies was a lot like asking for the moon; Unrealizable, unheard of, to a point maybe even blasphemous! It wasn’t until a year  or two ago that the likes of Chi Brotonel’s Intastella Burst HK and Fred Perry pushed forward and took the risk of bringing in some of the most respected bands and artists that may not fill stadiums in Manila but bring in a crowd (that could possibly turn into a riot).

THE WEEKEND THAT WAS 7107

Words by Manila Concert Scene
Photos by Cyril Borgonia

The 7107 music festival was slated by its producers to be the biggest music festival ever staged locally – and that promise was well delivered. Attracting over an estimate of 20,000 concert goers, the international music festival was an event that was indeed worth the trip. Spanning across a segment of the 177 hectare huge Global Gateway Logistics City in Clark, the festival served up great sound system, spectacular stage production, a program flow that functioned like clockwork, and a general atmosphere of merriment amongst its attendees. Dotted with side attractions courtesy of their major sponsors, like SMART, which hosted free WIFI, an elevated viewing deck and an activity booth to help kill downtime while waiting for the onstage action.

A Concert You Don't Want To End

Words by Manila Concert Scene

Rachelle Ann Go's SOLD OUT send-off concert last February 25 at the Meralco Theater is a real epitome of an exit with a bang. Don't fret Shinatics, as this exit is just temporary.

Miss Rachelle opened the show with a mash up of Feeling Good and Applause followed by Katy Perry's Roar and Eye Of The Tiger. During the night, Shin talked about how grateful she is for the countless support she has been receiving for over 10 years in the business. She took us back from her beginnings and sang Through The Rain, her winning piece from Search For A Star. A short VTR was then played showing her bandmates from high school reminiscing their moments with the young superstar.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis To Hit Manila This March!

Words by Mafe Bongalon

March just got hotter as 4-time Grammy award winner Macklemore and Ryan Lewis will take the Philippine stage for the first time!

Rapper Macklemore and Ryan Lewis produced their independent album “The Heist” in 2012 which went straight to number 2 on the US Billboard 200 charts! The two started making awesome collaborations five years ago but the release of their first single “Thrift Shop” from their album really made a buzz for the duo. The song reached number 1 on the US Billboards 100 and it was the first time since 1994 for a song not backed up by a major label to get the number one spot. Both Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are proud to have reached this success independently producing their independent album “The Heist”. The second single “Can’t hold US” also reached number 1 on the US 100 Billboard charts making them the first duo to get 2 singles on the top spot. But it did not end there, hit after hit, they were making a name for themselves!

The Circus + The New Minstrels

Words by Kix Suarez

Back in the day, (when I was not born yet), there were not a lot of DJs for parties just yet. Ragers weren’t about CDJs or beat makers. It was either you had a vinyl player playing the most current hits at a party or if you were part of the cool clique, you’d have a show band, which was called a ‘combo’.

Two of the most sought after ‘combos’ back then were The New Minstrels and The Circus band. The New Minstrels was formed over at San Beda College. Ding Mercado and Eugene Villaluz were two of the members that started it all. As they started playing more gigs and making more buzz in the local college circuit, they began to open the group to girls and other guys to join in the fun. Some of these notable members were Louie Reyes of Holy Ghost College and Joey Albert from Assumption.

The New Minstrels were known for their wonderful Top 40 and kundiman renditions. They had sophistication about the way they interpreted and performed the songs. They were jazzy but at the same time pop. Enough to keep the crowd entertained.
