The "Hugot Director" and Her Dream Soundtrack

Words by RA Librando

Last September 3, 2015, Manila Concert Scene was able to chat with Antoinette Jadaone, the most sought after writer/director for film and now for television. Best known for films that have deeply embedded emotions or with "hugot", she was casually baptized as the "Hugot Director" by celebrity Vice Ganda.

Her foray in television wasn't something she looked forward to. Her tedious and rigorous work in television under her mentor, Joyce Bernal was something that she did not want to repeat but fate had other plans for her.

There were three things that got her to accept  "On the Wings of Love". First, the undeniable chemistry of  the Jadine loveteam  which she found charming in their film debut as leads for the movie, "Diary of Panget". Second, since some scenes needed to be shot in San Francisco, this flamed her travel bug heart into excitement to be in another location. Third, the series would be done in her genre of choice, Romantic Comedy or Rom-Com.

With this, she dived right in, not knowing how audiences would react with the change of the usual time slot reserved for highly emotional drama. Since fans now turn to social media to react on certain scenes, she based her next move on how they will and so far it has been good. Ratings had been generous and she can't help but be appreciative of the solid fan base of the loveteam.

Moving forward, she also discussed potential projects such as directing a "Kris-Tek" film (Kris and Herbert "Bistek" Bautista) this coming MMFF 2015. She explains that this project had already given her so much excitement.

She  also expressed her desire to cast Piolo-Juday in a dream project. this couple served as the inspiration for her to become a rom-com director.

Antoinette uses music in her movies as a storytelling device as seen from her films use of Up Dharma Down's "Tadhana", Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and now as Kyla's rendition of "On the Wings of Love". We asked her if she had a song that she wanted to use in her future projects, and surprisingly it was Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" that conveys her current state. This also pays homage to the cult classic "Almost Famous".
